Lent on the wagon

March 20, 2011 | 8:38 pm

As we have done for about 6 or 7 years now, Nikki and I have given up alcohol for Lent.

Ten days in now and it’s going quite well. I’ve managed to get through 2 Rugby internationals (one in the pub) without having a beer. There is a football match next weekend (England vs Wales) that will try to distract me, and the weekend after is Mother’s Day.

But I’ve done it before, so I’m sure I can do it again.

I’m hoping this year, it will help with the training as well. I’ve put a couple of pounds on from the weight I was towards the end of last summer when I was doing the London to Paris ride. And I’d like to be even lighter (if I can) by the time I do the London Triathlon in July.

So if this Lent can kick off a concerted effort to loose a few pounds, I will be even more motivated to stay clear of the demon John Smith’s until Easter Sunday at least!

Hi Gareth, I was interested in your item on giving up alcohol for Lent. I wanted to get a few pounds off after Christmas, in preparation for training for the London to Paris. I vowed to go to Easter without a drink. All was going well my weight was down 8 pounds. Then I went to France for work for a week, had several drinks each night, and the weight was back up 3 pound. Back on the waggon again.
