I stand corrected

November 12, 2010 | 5:47 pm

I don’t suppose this will be the last time but I noticed something today on Facebook and realised I must have made a mistake in a post earlier this week.

I was recalling our previous HbA1c test in Spetember and thought our diabetic nurse told us to get it to 7.5 and that it would never go below 7.

I must have imagined the latter part, as I have learned today that well managed diabetics can keep their HbA1c in the fives. And I’m sure that our diabetic nurse wouldn’t give me a minimum if there wasn’t one. So apologies to anyone who read that, if I mislead you.

It also put’s Samuel’s result from Wednesday in a little more context. 6.1 – down from 8.1 – is still excellent but it certainly isn’t a minimum. We shall continue to work vigilently to keep Samuel’s condition under control and hope that will bring his next HbA1c down again.

Above the 7s means that the average is too high, and the higher it is, the greater chance for complications later in life. To keep an a1c in the 6s is generally great. The 5s could be even better, though there’s some big exceptions to that. My first a1c was 5.4. While that sounds great, it was nearly killing me. I was on NPH insulin (peaks after several hours) and was bottoming out very hard twice at day. I tried to time my meals and snacks, and check more often, but was still having bad lows too often. Since then I’ve mostly been between 6-6.5, with much lower deviation on a daily basis. I’m still working on bringing down some meal peaks with proper timing, and even with this better control, my a1c probably won’t move.
