No Petrol Tuesday

October 5, 2010 | 5:59 pm

The weather forecast was good so I left the car behind this morning and went to work by bike.

I took a slightly longer route than normal this morning, and a much longer route home.

The detour this morning was deliberate. There is a section of road from Tickhill to Maltby that I just don’t like. It has a blind hill and bend, is overshadowed by trees so is dark and covered in fallen leaves, and often floods. All of which at 7.30 on an autumn morning adds up to too many hazards for me.

The detour this evening was not so deliberate. I got lost! Plain and simple. I was hoping to go through the village of Wiston and come home a new route. But by the time I got there, I’d run out of time, and was going to get home too late. And of course, losing your way in Sheffield invariably means going up and down more hills. Oh well – it keeps you fit I suppose!

These two rides represent my first contributions to #Oct100 – a challenge club run by Phill Connell. 35 miles in one day. Not too shabby, but I won’t be doing that everyday, that’s for sure.

Phil has three categories for miles that qualify towards your monthly total – leisure, commute and turbo trainer! I shan’t be putting on the miles I did on the turbo trainer over the weekend. Mostly because I registered for the challenge after I’d done the miles at ASDA. But also, I can’t be 100% sure how far I did. I know how long I was on the bike, but my trainer doesn’t tell me how far I have done, so it would be hard to get an accurate figure.

Let’s see how many miles I can actually do by the end of the month!
